Super Eagles Just Average, Says Etim Esin Ahead 2026 WCQ”

Former Nigeria international Etim Esin has criticised the Super Eagles, describing the players as “average” following their 1-1 draw with South Africa in Tuesday’s crucial Group C World Cup qualifier in Bloemfontein.

The encounter saw the hosts take the lead in the 25th minute after captain William Troost-Ekong scored an unfortunate own goal. Nigeria responded before halftime, with Calvin Bassey heading home an equaliser in the 44th minute—though the ball appeared to glance off his arm.

Despite the draw, Nigeria remain in third place with 11 points, six adrift of leaders South Africa. Esin lamented the team’s struggles and warned that the Super Eagles risk missing another World Cup.

“We have average players in the Super Eagles. The team lacks creativity. Nobody can confidently take on an opponent one-on-one or make something happen,” Esin said. “It’s a sad day for Nigerian football. To think we could miss another World Cup is terrible.”

The Super Eagles will resume their qualification campaign in October with fixtures against Lesotho and Benin Republic.
